Review: The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Many people I have talked to have either liked or disliked this book. I think that I have managed to come out somewhere in the middle. It was hard to find a character that you could cheer for throughout the book. However, the fact that I developed such a strong opinion about them tells me that they were really well written. If they had been poorly written or developed, it would have been hard to care about them at all.

For her first venture into the world of adult literature, I think J.K Rowling did a good job. She took a interesting idea and did a good job of developing it. She also forced her audience to think about the would around them and how it is not a bright and happy as we may want it to be. I enjoyed listening to it as an audio book but am not sure I would have finished reading if I had picked up the physical. Sometime books just do better when someone else reads it to you.

The Lonely Nickel Saga

There once was a nickel who lived in cash drawer. In the morning he would be placed in the nickel section of the drawer and in the nickel envelope at night. Unlike the other coins, the nickel was all alone. It might have a friend during the day but every night it went to sleep alone.

Weeks went by and the nickel could do nothing but hope that one day he would no longer be alone. All he could do is listen to the cling of other coins. To make matters worse, there were two rolls of nickels just waiting for the nickel to leave. The lonely nickel was left to wonder would he every get out of this drawer?
